The rise of cyber crime targeting UK Businesses

It’s impossible to ignore the recent surge of cyberattacks aimed at UK businesses, with many breaches going either unnoticed or being discovered too late. Larger businesses, such as M&S are expecting to lose £300m in profits this year alone, while Co-op has informed all 6.5m customers that their data was breached. Both businesses are expected to continue to operate; unfortunately, not all businesses can expect a recovery after a breach.

The Knights of Old was held to ransom when a hacker got into their IT systems and encrypted the data. The Knights of Old tried to engage with a specialist ransomware negotiation firm, which estimated that the cost to decrypt could be as much as £5m. Sadly, The Knights of Old could not afford to pay such a large sum, which has now resulted in the company going under.

These are just a few examples of larger organisations; however, stats released recently by the UK government show 42% of medium-sized businesses, while 25% of small businesses, were likely to experience cybercrime.

Businesses can take measures to improve their security

At Cloud Central, we believe a proactive approach is needed to ensure your businesses can stay up and running if there is a breach. We suggest taking multiple different steps to ensure your business is safe:

Backup and Disaster Recovery

Investing in data backup and disaster recovery is vital to ensuring that your organisation can get back up and running as soon as possible. More advanced solutions can also detect when there is malware within the backup, which means you can recover from a clean backup.

End-Point Protection

End-point security protection safeguards your business from potential risks that may arise at various endpoints, including laptops, desktops, mobile devices, and servers.  Unlike anti-virus, endpoint protection offers a comprehensive approach when dealing with malware. This includes detection, encryption, and managing the firewall.

Managed Detection and Response

Managed Detection and Response (MDR) is a cybersecurity service that provides organizations with 24/7 threat monitoring, detection, and response capabilities, often including threat hunting, by leveraging both advanced technology and expert human analysis.

User Training

Training your team to detect the signs of an attack like phishing is vital to maintaining security.

IT Governance

Implementing a strong IT policy across your organization can provide essential protections from bad actors who try to hack your business’s infrastructure.
